What is an SBA 7(a) loan?
SBA 7(a) is a government-guaranteed lending program offered through participating lenders. Eligible borrowers can obtain loans of up to $5 million for approved business purposes. The lender makes the loan; the SBA guaranty supports a portion of the lender’s risk.
What can a 7(a) loan finance?
- A business acquisition or eligible change of ownership.
- Working capital to support business operations.
- Equipment, furniture, fixtures, and eligible improvements.
- Eligible commercial real estate purchases or improvements.
- Qualifying business debt refinancing.
Start with the structure, not just the amount.
For an acquisition, the purchase price is only the starting point. The financing discussion also needs to account for working capital, transition costs, available cash, and how the business will operate after closing.
For an expansion, it helps to separate the one-time investment from the ongoing operating need. That distinction makes it easier to explain what the loan will accomplish and how the business will support repayment.
What I’ll ask about your request
- The purpose: What are you buying, refinancing, or improving?
- The business: What does it do, where does it operate, and how long has it been operating?
- The repayment picture: What do historical results and expected changes tell us?
- Your investment: What cash is available for the transaction and post-closing operations?
- The timeline: Are there contract, lease, or closing deadlines?
SBA 7(a) loan questions
Can I use a 7(a) loan to buy a business?
A qualifying business purchase or ownership change may be eligible. The proposed ownership, business eligibility, use of proceeds, buyer qualifications, and ability to repay all require review.
How much do I need for a down payment?
There is no single answer for every transaction. The required investment depends on the transaction type, applicable SBA requirements, and the lender’s underwriting. Share the project details before relying on a down-payment estimate.
Do I need a complete loan package before contacting you?
No. Start with a short description of the business and financing need. Financial statements and supporting documents become part of the formal review, through an appropriate submission method.
Does submitting an inquiry check my credit?
This site’s inquiry form does not run a credit check and is not a loan application. Any later application and credit authorization are handled separately.
